In-Depth Blog #6 – Important Lessons

Posted by: | April 8, 2011 | 1 Comment |

So after near 4 months of in-depth (has it really been so long?), not only have I progressed with making jewellery, but I’ve learned some important life lessons along the way. First, I really need to learn to clean up as I go along. And second, subjects like math take precedence over mucking about with jewellery and stuff.

Over Spring Break, I had planned to not only meet up with my mentor, but also to attend a sort of course about beading and stuff. This, however, kind of fell on its face because of how much time I spent sick over break. Bleh.

Next, I was planning to put up either a video or step-by-step pictures of me making something, but I soon realized that that would not work. Namely, I just sit around in a huge mess of jewellery supplies, trying to make a spiral here or a chain there, and I never know what I’m going to do ahead of time, I just make it up as I go along and hope it ends up looking good. I did give away a bracelet and a pair of earrings already, as I mentioned earlier, and so now two other classmates asked if I could make them something, too. I actually really like giving them away and then seeing them wear the pieces I made. I think this will help me get used to parting with the pieces I’ve made, since I was considering doing some selling at In-Depth Night.

Also, I’ve figured out that, with all my new tools and skills, I can fix my own broken jewellery, which I’ve done already (or I can just dissect it for future use – done this already :D ). So, if anyone likes, I can try to fix any pieces of broken jewellery for them. Yes? Good.

    Emily,
It’s awesome that you have found a way to make your in depth skills applicable in your life. Giving your jewlery as gifts and selling sounds like a great hobby and possible source of money. There are also many websites for local artists looking to sell their work and farmers markets during the summer where people can sell what they have made. Maybe you could post some picture of what you have been working on for your next blog.
